Migrants’ AIDS epidemic threat

BRITAIN is facing an Aids epidemic after the revelation that TWO THIRDS of all new cases are in immigrants.

Almost none of these foreigners seeks treatment and could be infecting the rest of the population, medics warned last night.

The problem is set to hit crisis point when Romania and Bulgaria — nations with some of Europe’s highest Aids rates — join the EU next year.

Workers from these countries are expected to flood into Britain.

Almost 59,000 Brits have an HIV infection that leads to Aids. There were almost 8,000 new cases last year — and 70 per cent were in immigrants, mostly from Africa and Eastern Europe, the Health Protection Agency revealed.

Sir Andrew Green of MigrationWatch said last night: “It is ironic that the Government are encouraging people to take precautions to stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases when a lot of the new cases are coming from overseas.”

The findings emerged from an HPA report compiled after health chiefs realised immigration had doubled from 300,000 in 1995 to 600,000 in 2004. Many fail to get help even TWO YEARS after entering the UK — despite showing symptoms of illness — creating the danger of an explosion in cases.

Immigrants are also responsible for 70 per cent of TB and malaria incidences, the report said. The HPA gathered infectious disease statistics from GPs and hospitals between 2004 and 2006.

And it warned TB was still a major issue, revealing that rates in UK-born citizens are four per 100,000, compared to 103 per 100,000 in immigrants.

Dr Jane Jones, who helped compile the report, said: “In 2004, 70 per cent of TB cases and HIV cases reported in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and 70 per cent of malaria cases were in patients born outside the UK.

“Non-UK born HIV cases increased from 62 per cent in 2000 to 70 per cent in 2004 and the majority of new heterosexual cases were born abroad.

“More than 25 per cent of TB cases in non UK-born people are present more than two years after they arrive.

“We need to be aware of the disease not just when people arrive in the country but also as an ongoing measure that the risk to the non UK- born does not stop once they arrive.”
